As the days tick by and the release of the conclusion of one of the greatest movie franchises comes to an “end”, expectations are high. I have made my opinion of The Last Jedi very clear on numerous occasions. Would I consider myself a butt hurt fanboy? Not really, because all of my gripes come from the actual story telling and not any of the actors or their portrayals. Do I dislike the entirety of TLJ? No, there are some really great parts in it, but those great parts are definitely overshadowed by the terrible story and even worse directing. I like Rian Johnson’s other work, Looper & Brick in particular; I haven’t seen Knives Out yet, but from the reviews I’ve seen, it’s a fantastic movie.
For those who may live under a rock and don’t know the massive movie due out in 2 days, The Rise of Skywalker, here’s the final trailer.
I’m excited for it, but I also hold a LOT of reservations about it. Having gotten my hopes up for The Last Jedi and having them dashed… I refuse to get super excited about any Star Wars movies anymore. That being said there are a few things I’m looking forward to for this movie…
REY v. KYLO
As you can see in the trailer, it looks like we will get a penultimate clash between Rey and Kylo Ren in this movie. The trailer shows that they appear to be fighting on the remains of the second Death Star which was destroyed at the end of Return of the Jedi. Kylo and Rey have had an interesting run in the sequel trilogy. They’ve been enemies and also reluctant allies before becoming enemies again. Kylo was massively overwhelmed by Rey’s force abilities in the The Force Awakens and it resulted in him getting his butt kicked on Starkiller Base. They clashed again in The Last Jedi but more so in a philosophical manner. They were linked through the force by Snoke and this caused them to have brief debates and share their connection several times in the film. When they finally met again, they joined together to fight back to back against Snoke’s Praetorian Guards on Snoke’s flagship. Despite Rey’s attempts to turn him to the light and Kylo’s attempts to turn Rey to the Dark their ideological differences wouldn’t budge when they both tried to take Luke/Anakin’s lightsaber causing it to rip in two and be destroyed.
Obviously Rey will need to reconstruct herself a lightsaber in order to confront Kylo and it looks from the trailer like she will go with tried and true blue colour.
God, I love Poe, he’s the new Wedge Antilles (who may be returning?!)! His cocky attitude and skills as a fighter pilot are unmatched by anyone in the Resistance, much like Wedge from the original trilogy and the Legends Universe. Oscar Isaac’s gravitas and likeable personality turned Poe from a one off character that was meant to die in The Force Awakens, to one of the best characters to come out of the sequel trilogy. Yes, Poe was originally meant to die in episode VII, but J.J. Abrams liked him so much that they kept him alive and the rest is history.
In this movie it looks like Poe is channeling his inner Rick O’Connell from The Mummy franchise crossed with Nathan Drake from the Uncharted game franchise and going on an old fashioned ground adventure. His wardrobe is literally the same as Brendan Fraser in The Mummy right down to his scarf. I don’t really care, but some people might. That being said, I also really hope that Poe gets into an X-wing and blows a whole lot of nameless First Order/Empire pilots up, because that’s what he’s best at!
This is the one that all the old school fans are waiting for, the big bad Emperor Sheev Palpatine back in the flesh to fuck the galaxy up… again! I remember watching the first teaser that was released and saying “meh, it looks okay”, but when we hear Palpatine’s laugh at the end… OH MY GOD! It was like I was a kid watching the movies for the first time again. Having dove into some of the expanded universe content where, surprise, Palpatine didn’t die and actually fucked things up for like another 30 years after Return of the Jedi, seeing him brought back was a huge bonus.
After the disappointing death of Snoke in The Last Jedi, having the original big bad that started everything is the only logical move that Disney and the writers could make. I know I for one was very taken aback at the death of Snoke without any explanation as to who he was. It looks like JJ and his team have scoured the Legends universe to find some sort of way that Palpatine could have not only survived but has conceivably been running everything from the start.
I will say that I did make a faux pas and found a leaked script from the upcoming film online and read it. I know I shouldn’t have, but I just couldn’t help myself! I will say that of what I read some of the things were a little concerning but overall I think the story will play out well and give the fans some great service. From the early reviews that have been released, the film looks to contain A LOT of content. That’s okay with me. I’ve tried to keep up with the House of Mouse canon as much as possible with comics and novels, but there’s just so many and I don’t have the time. Some critics have said “This movie is very rude to Rian Johnson”, good! Well, maybe not good, but deserved. Star Wars has one of the most vocal and vicious fan bases around. Trust me, I’ve seen the forums and they are not nice people. So taking the story that they all had in their head and throwing it out the window to make your own intricate tale was not the best move on his part. Was it a complete surprise? Yes. Would I watch another Star Wars movie done by him? If he got to craft his own ORIGINAL story and characters, absolutely.
Mostly the one thing I’m really hoping for is just that this movie isn’t going to suck. I don’t think my heart can take it… that being said, even if it’s terrible… Netflix’s Witcher series comes out tomorrow so at least there’s that!
See you next week!
