I am probably not the only one who loved the 1986 Tom Cruise classic Top Gun. It was one of the movies I remember watching with both my Grandma and my mom, which was different… I guess they both loved that volleyball scene… we all know the one! That being said, Top Gun was one of those movies that could’ve used a direct sequel but never got one. It was primed for someone to make another story regarding Soviets and the cold war, but it just never came to fruition.
Recently they released the official movie poster of the film which releases next summer and we also got another trailer with even more action and the expanded cast, though we all just need Tom Cruise in his flight get up, let’s be honest here…
We are given not only shots of Tom Cruise in a cock pit looking very intense as he pulls some epic flight maneuvers, but we are also shown the rest of the cast.
Jon Hamm appears an officer (three star Vice Admiral) who is potentially responsible for the flight academy. Miles Teller is the fully grown up son of Maverick’s former co-pilot Goose who is following in his father’s foot steps. Val Kilmer will be making an appearance as “Iceman” who is now and instructor, and Jennifer Conolly is playing Maverick’s love interest. Glen Powell is set to appear as a pilot trainee alongside Monica Barbaro who also plays a trainee with the call sign “Phoenix”.
We don’t know much about the story so far, but what we do know is this…
Maverick has been testing planes and finding limits for the past 30 years. He has constantly dodged promotions due the fact that he wants to remain in the cock pit and not behind a desk. When he is chosen to train a select group of pilots from the Top Gun academy for a specialized mission, he comes face to face with Bradley Bradshaw call sign “Rooster”, the son of his former co-pilot “Goose”. Now Maverick must work through the things he’s been running from his whole life and help these pilots do something that’s never been done.
In the original film it was the aging F-14 Tomcat that they used while the Russians were flying Mig-28s. In this movie, Maverick and the other trainees will be flying the F/A -18F Super Hornet. Given the time frame of the movie, I am a little confused as to why they chose the Super Hornet instead of the F-22 Raptor or something more modern, but clearly there has to be a reason and it’s something we will more than likely have explained to us in the movie.
The music is back! The Top Gun theme, “Top Gun Anthem” from the first movie in the trailer brought the biggest smile to my face as I watched the two and a half minute trailer. Kenny Loggins who composed “Danger Zone” for the first movie has also confirmed that the song will appear in this movie too. The rest of the score will once again be composed by Hans Zimmer and Harold Faltermeyer.
This movie brings back such nostalgia for me and if the trailer is to be any indicator, we may get an updated version of the beach scene, maybe with less homo-eroticism… or may be not, only time will tell.
One thing is for certain with this trailer, I once again feel the need… the need for speed!
Top Gun: Maverick is set to release on June 26, 2020.
